People want to help those in
need, but sometimes it’s not that easy. One of the many important things we
do at Rebuilding Together is to give folks the chance to help their
neighbors.
Volunteers tell us that our annual Rebuilding Day is a great experience.
People gather together around a coffee pot early in the morning, and plans
are carefully laid out. Everyone has a skill to contribute, even if they
don’t know it. When they break for lunch, the volunteers have already seen
the difference they are making. By the time they go home at night, they know
at least one family has a warm, safe home and many new friends.
Although Rebuilding Day is only once a year, there is usually a volunteer
opportunity once a month with the wheelchair ramp program. A ramp build is
usually planned for one Saturday each month and volunteers can be involved
on one or several projects.
“It feels good to set aside your own chores and help someone else with
theirs,” Nat Bothwell of ANB Financial said, after spending an afternoon
moving mulch at the home of a disabled grandmother trying to get custody of
her grandchildren. “It’s one Saturday out of your life. If you can’t give up
one Saturday to help someone who really needs it, then something is wrong.”
“I volunteer for Rebuilding Together because it fulfills in a substantial
way one of the most critical needs in our community - - providing a safe,
warm and dry home for those homeowners who are no longer self-sufficient,”
retired business executive Lynn Markel said. “Our volunteer efforts on
Rebuilding Day provide the opportunity to know the homeowners we help and to
be personally fulfilled by seeing the benefits of our work.”
One skilled volunteer can lead a group of novices through the process of
replacing siding on a home. When they’re finished, not only is the home
sided, the volunteers have that feeling of accomplishment that comes when
you complete a task you didn’t know you could do. “We know that Rebuilding
Day provides a positive experience because volunteers keep coming back year
after year. And you can just feel the excitement on Rebuilding Day,” said
Founding Executive Director Debbie Potochnik, “it’s such a rewarding experience.”
Working on a wheelchair ramp project is another volunteer opportunity
throughout the year. We usually have a ramp build planned for one Saturday
each month and volunteers can be involved on one or several projects.
